Global warming choose wisely

Every country establishes an economic system that it believes will best meet the goals and objectives of its people and the nation as a whole. The system selected is implemented to attain these goals. The nation is not created to meet the objectives of the economic system. It is the other way around.

The United States selected the free market system as one that is best aligned with the philosophy under which the country was created and operates. For the most part, citizens of this country believe, as I do, that each individual has an obligation to provide for his family while abiding by the laws, rules and regulations of the country.

The Founding Fathers were wise enough to understand that there would be situations where the objectives of the country could be better accomplished by government rather than free markets. The country's military and public education is a good example. Other examples include energy independence and global warming research related to seeking alternative, cleaner energy sources.

There is a talk show on WJR that airs from 1 AM to 5 AM every weekday called Red Eye Radio that had a discussion about this issue on July 31, 2014. The hosts were taking the stance that government should not be involved in subsidizing the cost of electric cars, wind power and solar energy. Their points included that the free market is a better allocator of the nations resources, these industries are losing money and if left on their own they would be out of business. The implication was that free enterprise would find solutions faster and more efficient than our federal governments meddling.

Using this logic we still would not be on the moon, the internet may not have been invented and New Orleans would still be under water. There is a significant amount of evidence that earth is warming at a rapid, potentially dangerous, rate that could result in a global calamity.

The Constitution clearly states
“The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;...”

I trust there is little room for dispute. The nation is arguing whether global warming is a threat to mankind but to say it should be ignored lacks logic. What is a layman to do?

We can ignore what the majority of scientists are saying and if we are right billions, maybe trillions, of dollars would be saved along with countless hours devoted to the problem by scientists, politicians and others. If we are wrong we will find out too late as earth may be uninhabitable by mankind. We must choose wisely.

  1. Too bad that the writer felt that the richest guy in that race was the best after chastising the rich Koch Bros. Seems Sarah's finger would be just as good as Uncle Joe's near the "button."
